In my role at Amazon Prime, I managed a project that started slipping behind schedule due to a combination of unclear requirements and dependencies on multiple external teams. We realized midway through the sprint that we were at risk of missing a key release milestone.
To address this, I first assessed the situation by breaking down the project into smaller components and identifying exactly where the delays were happening. I worked with the team to prioritize tasks based on business impact and separated critical deliverables from nice-to-have features.
Next, I improved communication by setting up daily checkpoint meetings with both internal and dependent teams to quickly resolve blockers. I also reallocated resources within my team, moving experienced engineers to critical path items while parallelizing less dependent tasks.
In addition, I collaborated with product stakeholders to reset expectations where needed, ensuring transparency while still committing to a realistic and achievable timeline.
As a result, we were able to recover most of the delay and delivered the critical features on time, with remaining enhancements planned for the next sprint.
This experience taught me that when a project is behind schedule, the key is to quickly identify bottlenecks, focus on priorities, increase communication, and adapt the plan while keeping stakeholders aligned.
